Micro welding, as the name suggests, involves welding on a microscopic scale. It is used for permanent jewelry, to weld a chain around a person’s write, neck or ankle, eliminating the need for a clasp. The chain can be cut off, need be, but it is a trendy and memorable way to level up your style and create a shared experience with a loved one.
If you are looking to weld permanent jewelry, here is a step-by-step process of how to weld the chain onto a customer. We recommend that you watch training videos (a training program can be found here), and that you practice before doing it on a person. It is important to feel comfortable and confident micro welding before you involve the safety of others.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Chose a chain and weld setting:
Begin by letting the client choose a chain. Each metal type requires a different weld setting, you can find those settings recommendations here.
Fasten the chain:
Cut the chain to the desired length of the client and use pliers and a jump ring to fasten the chain to their wrist. Open the jump ring enough to connect the two sides of the chain. Push the two ends of the jump ring back together. Let the client move their arm around a bit to make sure they like the fit.
Protect the clients arm and eyes:
Make sure to have the client wear protective glasses and slip a protective piece between the chain and their arm. Protect your own eyes with glasses or optics.
Touch the welding stylus to the opening of the jump ring:
Find the jump ring and then find the opening you pulled apart to connect the chain. Touch the stylus to the opening. This will weld the jump ring completely closed, making the chain permanent.
Check for a strong weld:
Carefully tug on both sides of the chain to guarantee the chain is welded well and will hold up against normal wear and tear.
That’s it!
Permanent jewelry micro welding is a specialized skill but easy to learn with attention to detail and practice. With the right equipment, materials, and attention to detail, anyone can master the art of permanent jewelry micro welding and become a successful permanent jewelry artist.
